Low Magick is another autobiographical work from Lon Milo DuQuette, written about 12 years after My Life with the Spirits. In this volume, each chapter starts with a quote, often one by Rabbi Lamed Ben Clifford, a very learned qabalist. We move from the Law of Attraction (see my review of Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich for more on the Law of Attraction) through some serious Goetia and Enochian Magick, to another exorcism (this one of a Catholic girl’s school)!
DuQuette has two key pieces of wisdom he strives to impart in this book:
- The most important secret of magick (and of life): DO NOT BE AFRAID!
- It’s all in your head…you just have no idea how big your head is (which is also the subtitle of this work).
At times, it sounds like he’s making a confession of being an atheist, with his views of magick firmly rooted in a pure psychological model. But he reassures us in a footnote: “After all, I can’t be an atheist. I’m a Freemason!” [p. 13]. I think there is similarity between DuQuette and Jung’s view of divinity: they don’t need to believe because they both know from personal experience.
I recommend this book. It’s a fun read. But make sure to read My Life with the Spirits first.
